Vinayaka Chaturthi, Ganesha Chaturthi or Vinayaka Cavithi are the another names of this festival. Ganesha is known as the elephant-headed god in India. This festival is celebrated for him. As per people believe, the work starting with Ganesha Pooja can be completed successfully without any obstacles. These obstacles are also known as "Vighna" in Sanskrit. So, Ganesha is also known as "Vighnaharta". 

When is Ganesha Chaturthi date in 2016?

Ganesh Chaturthi celebration date in 2016 is on Monday, 5 September 2016. Usually, it is changing every year. This year Ganesh Chaturthi date and Teachers day are on the same day.

History of Vinayaka Chaturthi

In the word "Ganesh Chaturthi", Chaturthi means "Fourth Day" or "Fourth State". Because this festival is celebrated in the first fortnight of the month of Bhaadrapada, it is known as "Ganesha Chaturthi". Bhaadrapada is a month in Gujarati calendar. This month is also known as "Bhaadarvo" in Saurashtra (Gujarat). This festival normally comes in August or September month of the Gregorian calendar. This festival is celebrated for ten days and ends on the fourteenth day of the fortnight. The last day of this festival is known as "Anant Chaturdashi".

Ganesha Chaturthi Celebrations

This festival is celebrated by people at home, offices, working places etc. Public Pandals are created to keep the clay images of Lord Ganesha. People worship Ganesha for ten days in a group. People pray, celebrate and worship the god with family and friends for this ten days. On the day of Anant Chaturdashi, the idol of Lord Ganesha is immersed in the deep water like sea or rivers or lake. After some time, this idol disintegrates in the water.

This festival is basically from Maharashtra and Telangana states. Dhol and Tasha are the instruments which are used by the people in Maharashtra to celebrate such a grand festival. Other states of India like Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala,Goa, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh also celebrate this festival. If we talk about other countries, Ganesha Chaturthi is celebrated in  the Terai region of Nepal as well as by the Hindu community in USA, Canada, and Mauritius.

Before a month of this festival, people start their preparation. People start to collect the funds from local residents, fair and workshop to build the pandals. People in Maharashtra starts to make Ganesha's idol with "Padya Pooja" which means worshipping the feet of lord Ganesha. Ganesha's idols are brought to the pandals. Some people also bring the Ganesha idol in their home but that idols are normally smaller than the public pandals. Before bringing the idol, family members and friends gather and decorate the pandals with the use of flowers and other items for decoration. After bringing the idol to the pandals, idols are also decorated with all these things.
