Light a bulb yet keep the flies away.
Everyone enjoys spending the long summer
evenings beyond the walls of home. Be it enjoying a cold lemon tea in your
garden or playing along with your siblings, everyone loves to spend the summer
evenings joyfully. But one thing that bugs this sweet evening is the insects
outside. Many solutions to get rid of these bugs are available in the market.
Ranging from mosquito repellent cream to anti-insect sprays. Unfortunately, all
of these come with some or the other side effects. Some mosquito repellent
creams might cause allergy or skin irritation.
Asthmatic patients might be
sensitive to anti-insect sprays or worse. So what is the elegant solution for
this bug? Definitely, staying inside the house is one but let’s not bereft our
young generation from enjoying the summer evenings..
In order to have fewer insects attracted by
the lights, researchers have devised a new combination of series of colours to
attract minimal number of insects. This light bulb is very simple yet an
elegant solution to avoid attracting insects by the lights. While fluorescent
and existing light bulbs emit light consisting of all the wavelengths from the
visible spectrum, the energy-efficient light bulbs are more inclined towards
the blue wavelength of the spectrum.
Too much exposure to a particular
wavelength, say blue light may cause disruption in the circadian rhythm of
human beings, not only this but at the same time these wavelengths attract the
insects and bug our lives. In order to avoid attracting the bugs , researchers
have combined a series of LEDs which emit light of different wavelengths from
the energy spectrum. This was to minimise the emission of blue and green light
which is suspected to be most attractive for the insects. The resulting
combination of light is claimed to attract 20% lesser insects than the
conventional light source. Moreover, the combination continues to lighten up
the surrounding with white light, thereby causing no discomfort to us.
The prototypes are already being tested and
are giving positive results. Researchers say that there is more scope of
expanding this technology. They believe that there are other combinations of
LEDs possible which may give even better results than the current
configuration. Maybe further research may yield a complete bug-free environment,
till then we can be a little cautious about the insects around. Don't let them
bite you.
